| BORDER MAKER
Your Border Maker is a great way to make borders and edges for your gardens and other landscape features. It is simple to use; here are a few tips:
Concrete mix: A good concrete mix is one part cement, two parts sand, and two parts gravel, plus sufficient water to form a firm workable mix. (Use small gravel, say 10mm or less) However this may be varied as desired; a higher proportion of cement produces a stronger concrete, a higher proportion of sand will make the mix easier to work into the mould. If you find it hard to work your mix into the mould, your mix may be too dry; try adding a little more water. Many bulk raw-material yards sell pre-mixed sand and gravel ready for concrete use, so talk to your local yard and check what they can offer. Alternatively, you can buy bagged concrete mix at most hardware stores. This is a little dearer, but very convenient if you are only doing a small job.
Coloured paving: Your garden borders may be made to any colour by adding powdered or liquid Oxide to the concrete mix. A wide range of Oxide colours are available at most hardware stores. Follow the manufacturer’s directions.
Ground preparation: The Border Maker is a 70mm deep mould, so you can place the mould so that the top is flush with the ground or garden bed, OR you can raise it up a little so that the border stands above the surrounding ground level. Clear the ground area, removing rocks or other debris, and ensure it is roughly level. If installing a border over grassed areas, it is best to remove the top 30-50mm of grass to provide a solid base. It is NOT necessary to get the ground perfectly smooth as needed for traditional border edging, because the concrete will automatically configure to the existing surface. To make the garden edging stronger, excavate 15mm more soil than necessary, and lay a smooth 15mm bed of concrete in your trench before placing your Border Maker mould on top.
Pouring the concrete: Place the Border Maker mould on the ground surface and fill it with concrete. Press the concrete into the two cavities with a trowel to ensure smooth edges. Trowel the surface to the desired finish, then loosen and lift the Border Maker. Smooth all edges. Repeat this process until your job is completed.
Corners, Curves and Contours: Because the Border Maker has rounded ends, you can follow any trajectory desired. Straight, curved, right angles ~ simple!
Maintenance: With normal care, your Border Maker will last many years providing it is cleaned thoroughly after each use. (At the end of each work session wash or scrub off any concrete before it sets.)
